Well, I have been resisting for quite some time the urge to play with an iPhone (being the gadget guy that I am and not having the $$ to spend on it right now). This week while I was on a business trip to PA, I stopped and went into an AT&T store and finally laid hands on one. I’ve been using a Treo 700w for about 2 years now, and absolutely love it. The all-in-one device was created for a guy like me. The iPhone takes the all-in-one to the next level. The touch and feel of the phone is just unbelievable. It was surprisingly easy to maneuver around the interface, and the browser is the best I’ve ever seen on a mobile device. That combined with the iPod blend makes it a nearly perfect device.
My big concern since the release has been about the keyboard…so I had to try it out. I must admit, reflecting on the first days of my Treo, it took me a while to get the hang of typing on it. Now, typing on it comes second nature. The iPhone has a fabulous idea…make almost all the buttons on-screen buttons. This works really well while you’re “pointing and clicking” (even this phrase is dated). Typing is a different story. I still had a tough time hitting the right keys. There’s something about the tactile component on the Treo that makes it a much better option for me. I could probably get used to the keyboard on the iPhone, but I think it would take a while. Perhaps some of you with an iPhone could comment on how long it took you to get the hang of it.
So, do I really like the iPhone? Yep. Do I want one? Sure. Do I want one badly enough to drop everything, switch carriers, and tell all my friends to go buy one? I don’t think so.
