  6. Read verse 9. What time of year was it? Why did the journey become more dangerous by insisting on going on?

  7. How far were they planning to go from Fair Havens before harboring for the winter? How far did they actually go?

  8. Read verses 18-20. Why had the crew lost hope? What did they expect would happen to them? How did Paul encourage them? Did they believe him?

  9. How long had they been in a ship out of control when they finally ran aground?

  10. How large was the boat that Paul was on? How many passengers were there? How many made it safely to land?

  11. Why did the crew and others on the ship want the prisoners killed? Why were they spared?

What is our reaction when we face impossible odds, or difficult circumstances? How can we learn from Paul, and from those with him, about the best way to trust God?

  1. Why was Elijah afraid of Jezebel?  Hadn’t he just shown the power of God on the mountain?  Why would he still be afraid of Jezebel after that? 
  2. What is special about the land of Beersheba?  What was the land like?
  3. Why was Elijah ready to die?  Why did he want to die?
  4. Why did God send an Angel to care for Elijah instead of sending Ravens like he did the first time?
  5. Is there any significance to Elijah traveling for 40 days without food?

  6. Do you think that Elijah was getting worried about the rain not coming after having sent his servant 7 times to look for signs of rain?  What was Elijah doing during this time?

  1. What made Ahab the real troubler of Israel?
  2. What was the purpose of Elijah calling for the prophets of Baal and Asherah to Mt. Carmel?  Why do you think that Ahab was so willing to grant the request of Elijah?
  3. Read verse 21.  What was the problem that Elijah saw in the people of Israel?
  4. What was the purpose of making the “show-down” center around the sacrifice?  What was the people’s opinion of what Elijah proposed?
  5. Why did Elijah have the prophets of Baal go first?
  6. Why did Elijah mock the prophets of Baal?  What did he suggest that their “gods” were doing?  Why did he do this?
  7. What was the reaction of the people to the prophets of Baal by the time of the evening sacrifice?  Why did Elijah let it go on for so long?
  8. Why did Elijah call the people near to him?
  9. What was the motivation of Elijah’s prayer to God?  How did God answer?
  10. What opinions do we waiver between?  Are we like the people of Israel in the time of Elijah?

 

1 Kings 18:1-20

 

  1. What was the reason that God, through Elijah, had prevented rain in Israel? 

  2. What was Elijah’s reaction when God asked him to show himself to Ahab?  What did Elijah expect Ahab’s reaction to be? 

  3. Who was Obadiah?  What was his role in Ahab’s kingdom? 

  4. What was Obadiah like?  Why did he hide the prophets of God?  Was there risk in doing this? 

  5. How desperate were the circumstances in the land because of the drought? 

  6. Explain the reaction that Obadiah had to Elijah.  Why was he so reluctant to go to Ahab with the news that Elijah wanted to talk to him? 

  7. Read verse 12.  What was Obadiah afraid would happen to Elijah after he reported to Ahab that he had found Elijah? 

  8. Why did Ahab call Elijah a “troubler of Israel”?  What was Elijah’s reaction to this accusation? 

  9. Why did Elijah call for the prophets to meet him at Mt. Carmel?  Why do you think Ahab agreed? 

  10. What can we learn from Obadiah’s fear about gong to Ahab?

1 Kings 17:17-24

 

  1. How were the widow and her son feeling after some time of God providing for their needs through flour and oil by the word of Elijah?

  2. What was the reaction of the widow when her son became sick and died? How would you have reacted in the same circumstances? Do you think that her reaction would be a typical reaction?

  3. Why did God allow the boy to die?

  4.  Even though the widow was angry with Elijah (and perhaps even with God), she allows Elijah to take her son up to his room. Why do you think that is?

  5.  Read Elijah’s prayer to God for the boy. Did Elijah feel angry about the boy? Did God cause the boy to die?

  6.  Do we have the same kind of faith that Elijah did, to pray for the boy’s life to return to him? What was special about Elijah and the circumstances that he was in?

  7.  Why did Elijah stretch himself out over the boy? Why three times?

  8.  What was the widow’s reaction to the resurrection? What was unique about her proclamation following the presentation of the child?

1 Kings 17:1-16

  

  1. Notice in verse one (1 Kings 17:1) that Elijah spoke directly to King Ahab.  How was he able to do that?
  2. What would your reaction be if God told you to go live out in the wilderness and that He would provide everything you need?
  3. Would you be excited about eating the food the ravens brought you?  Do you think there was any doubt in Elijah’s mind about doing what God wanted him to do?  Did the method that God used to provide for Elijah help him get past the uncertainty?
  4.  Read verse 7 (1 Kings 17:7).  What would your reaction have been to the brook drying up?
  5. What was Elijah’s reaction when he was told to go to Zaraphath?
  6. What was the state of the widow when Elijah arrived?  Was she in any state to be caring for Elijah?
  7. Why do you think Elijah was sent to this particular widow?  Surely there were other widows who were in circumstances that were equally as bad.  Why this woman?
  8. How does God provide for us today?  Are you expecting a miracle?
